New Features in Finale

• Finale now includes a more comprehensive user experience when running the application in macOS Dark Mode.

• Finale's underlying drawing mechanism has been updated to offer better performance and responsiveness while editing and scrolling.

• If Finale encounters a problem saving a document, a warning is displayed with suggestions for further action.

• Music written with percussion clefs using standard rather than percussion notation now exports correctly.
• Music written with 2- or 3-line staves now exports and imports correctly.
• Percussion notation rests set to a specific staff position now export and import correctly.
• Custom clef designer definitions are now exported.
• Stacked chord symbols are now exported and imported.
• Measure numbers now export more accurately from documents with multiple measure number regions.
• Stems shortened to nothing using the Stem Length tool are now exported correctly.
• MusicXML import no longer changes MIDI quantization settings.
• When notes display in other layers when rhythmic notation is applied, their stem directions now export correctly and articulations are displayed after import.

• v1.959. The ARIA Player has been updated to v1.959 in the full Finale installer. Note: The new ARIA version may cause older versions of Finale to display an incompatibility message. Users can find the ARIA Player v1.959 installer in the MakeMusic Download Library.

• Cleanup. Architectural cleanup efforts have been made to the Document Options.
• FinaleScript. FinaleScript's import options commands now import all associated options.
• Guides. Guides are now included when saving a Document Options library.

• ReWire. ReWire has been updated to comply with Mac notarization standards.
• Security. Finale executables and installers have been updated and modernized to comply with current OSes and security practices.

• Grace notes and resized notes. The Patterson Beams Plug-in has been updated to affect grace notes and resized notes. Stem lengths and beam angles look like they would at full size, but without trying to avoid wedges with the staff lines.

• Articulations.
  • Centering. Articulations that center on-stem when stem-side now center on the notehead if there is a notehead-centered articulation also present on stem-side.
  • Layers. Finale is now smarter about articulation placement when multiple layers are present. Articulations set to Above Note now avoid collisions with articulations in other layers when Place stem side when multiple layers are present is checked in the Articulation Designer dialog box. The support files have been updated to reflect this change.

• Hyperlinks. Hyperlinks can have a URL (and display text) that is more than 128 characters long. See Hyperlink dialog box.

• MusicXML.
  • Linked parts are automatically generated when importing a MusicXML file. See MusicXML Preferences dialog box.
  • Repeat endings (backward and forward) and text repeat marks appear in all linked parts when exported and re-imported into Finale.
  • Tempo marks, tempo alterations, and rehearsal marks appear in all linked parts when exported and re-imported into Finale.
  • Page sizes and margins, system breaks, and page-attached text are accurately exported and re-imported into Finale when exporting compressed MusicXML files with the export linked parts option set. When the MusicXML preference for including linked parts in the export is off, data specific to linked parts isn't saved and re-importing into Finale will use the default page layout settings for linked parts.

• Patterson Plug-ins Lite. Patterson Plug-ins Lite has been updated to display improved results when running the plug-in on a beam group with on-stem tremolo articulations.

• SmartMusic. Finale can now be used to convert existing classic SmartMusic files (.SMPX and .SMP) to files for the web-based SmartMusic (.SMZ). This option can be used by selecting File > Convert. See Convert submenu.

• Articulations.
  • Entry. Articulations are now automatically stacked on entry. When an articulation is removed from a stack, the remaining articulations are automatically adjusted. When a removed articulation is moved back into the stack, the stack automatically adjusts to accommodate the articulation and maintains manual adjustments.
  • Positioning. When articulations are placed stem-side, their positioning is centered horizontally on the stem.
  • Pre-Finale v26 documents. Users are prompted to update articulation positioning when opening a pre-Finale v26 document. This removes any existing manual positioning in favor of automatic collision avoidance. This preference can be set and changed at any time in the Preferences dialog box. If you have decided to maintain manual positioning for all of your pre-Finale v26 documents, you can later update individual documents to adhere to the automatic placement rules defined in the Articulation Designer dialog box by using the Change Articulation Assignment dialog box (Utilities > Change > Articulations).
  • Articulation menu. Users can quickly change an individual articulation’s stacking behavior by using the Articulation menu.
  • Articulation Selection dialog box. The stacking order is defined by the order of articulations in the Articulation Selection dialog box. An asterisk indicates that an articulation can be stacked. When an articulation is duplicated in the Articulation Selection dialog box, the new articulation appears next to the original articulation and isn't assigned a Metatool.
  • Articulation Designer dialog box. The Articulation Designer dialog box has been updated to give users control over an articulation's default behavior within a document.
  • Flipping. Flip articulations using the F keystroke or new Articulation menu or context menu. When a note's stem is flipped, stacked articulations (and any manual adjustments to their positioning) automatically move to the opposite side of the note.
  • Create Handbells Used Chart plug-in. The Create Handbells Used Chart plug-in has been updated to work with the new articulation stacking feature.
  • Resizing. Articulations that are set to horizontally center on a note remain centered when a note is resized.
  • Program defaults. Document Styles, tutorials, default documents, libraries, and templates have been updated to take advantage of automatic articulation stacking and collision avoidance.
  • See Articulations for more information.

• Authorization.
  • Process. The Finale authorization process has been updated to be more concise so that users can start creating music quicker.
  • Error messages. Finale displays more detailed messages regarding authorization errors to help users troubleshoot issues they may encounter.

• Change Note Durations dialog box. The Change Note Durations dialog box has been improved to clarify the effects of changing all note durations by percentage.

• Finale files.
  • Templates. 31 new templates have been added to Finale, including two new ukulele templates with correct fretboards and the return of the Maestro font Lead Sheet template. See Templates.
  • Libraries. Document Styles, templates, and default documents have been updated with new chord, expression, and Smart Shape libraries. See Finale libraries.

• Go to Measure dialog box. Users can quickly navigate to a specific measure in a document by using the Go to Measure dialog box.

• Installation improvements. The Finale v26 installer allows users to choose between replacing their Finale v25 installation with Finale v26 or retaining both versions on their computer.

• Libraries. Chord suffix libraries for Times New Roman, Broadway Copyist, Arial, Finale Copyist Text, and Jazz Text fonts have been updated to include even more commonly used chord symbols.

• Mac performance enhancements.
  • macOS 10.14. Finale has been updated to be fully compatible with macOS 10.14.
  • Scrolling. Horizontal scrolling speed in Scroll View and Studio View has been improved. Stability when using the trackpad to scroll has also been improved.
  • Selecting. The lag time associated with selecting a measure on a high-resolution monitor has been reduced.
  • Images. The background and paper images have been optimized for high-resolution monitors.
  • Copying. The time it takes to paste measures, especially multiple times, has improved.
  • Icons. Simple Entry and Smart Shape toolbar icons have been updated for Retina screens.
  • Smart Shapes. Slow document performance has improved for documents with a significant number of Smart Shapes.
  • Transposition. Speed when transposing a selected region of music has improved in high-resolution mode.
  • Fonts. Bold fonts display correctly on high-resolution monitors.
  • Speedy Entry. Note entry delay when using Speedy Entry on high-resolution Macs has been addressed.
  • Simple Entry. Lag when using Simple Entry to adjust a note up or down on high-resolution Macs has been addressed.
  • Editing. Speed when adding, nudging, modifying, and deleting items like lyrics, tuplets, and chords has been improved.

• MIDI setup. MIDI setup is automatically configured when Finale is first launched and after preferences are cleared. Manual configuration can still be made in the MIDI Setup dialog box.

• MusicXML.
  • Compressed .mxl files are now the default format for MusicXML exports, making creating SmartMusic files with graphics easier. This option can be changed in the MusicXML Preferences dialog box.
  • Exporting and importing speed for large batches of MusicXML files has been significantly improved.
  • Improved exporting and importing of:
    • Fortissimo, upbow, and downbow Maestro characters
    • X noteheads
    • Page-attached text blocks with rectangle enclosures
    • sffzpp and sfzzppp dynamics
  • Chord symbols now export more accurately, including symbols that use the Finale Numerics font and Broadway Copyist Text Extended Character Set.
  • Gould arrow quartertone accidentals are exported accurately to MusicXML 3.1.
  • Finale adds a warning in an exported MusicXML file when Display in Concert Pitch is set and includes transposed music.
  • Error logs that are generated from MusicXML imports and exports now include more file path information.
  • False positive processing instructions for certain expressions has been cleaned up.
  • MusicXML export support has been added for the Express Music fonts and the MetTimes font by DVM Publications.
  • Default fonts for text blocks and lyrics are now imported as font document options.
  • Non-arpeggiated symbols are now imported.
  • Undertie elisions are now imported.
  • Single-note slides now export and import with positioning.
  • Font families for custom line text are now imported.
  • During import, if more than one articulation maps to a MusicXML element, the one with auto note/stem side positioning is the one chosen.
  • Unrecognized other-dynamics content now imports as an expression in a text font, rather than being ignored.
  • Links now import with page-attached text blocks.

• Rests. The Simple Entry Rests Palette is now one of the default palettes displayed when launching Finale.

• Setup Wizard. 64th and dotted 64th notes can now be selected as pickup measures in the Setup Wizard.

• Slurs.
  • Articulation interactions. Articulations automatically adjust to slur placement and contour. For more control, the Smart Slur Options dialog box has been updated to allow adjustment of the minimum space between slurs and articulations.
  • Engraver Slurs. Engraver Slurs automatically update when a slur nested within another slur is deleted.

• Smart Shapes.
  • Viewing changes. Finale no longer requires an Update Layout or Redraw Screen command to see an automatic Smart Shape adjustment when the contents of the measure change.
  • Metatools. New Smart Shapes have been added and Metatools have been updated. See Metatools.

• Tremolos.
  • Stem and stemless notes. Stem length is automatically adjusted when a tremolo is added to a note to avoid collisions with flags and beams. When tremolos are added to a whole note, they are horizontally centered to the attached note. Tremolos maintain their positioning on stems when other articulations are added, deleted, moved, or flipped. Newly entered tremolos automatically adhere to enhanced positioning.
  • Staff interaction. Tremolos automatically remain in the staff and never intersect with ledger lines by default.

• Clear function. Non-extended keyboard users can now access the clear key functionality by using FUNCTION+SHIFT+DELETE. This function can be used to reset the positioning of the following:
  • Group and staff names
  • Brackets
  • Tuplets
  • Slurs
  • Measure numbers
  • Expressions
  • Articulations
  • Repeat brackets
• Garritan Instruments for Finale. The Garritan Instruments for Finale installer has been updated to improve speed and produce a higher installation success rate.
• MusicXML.
  • MusicXML 3.1 support has been updated to the final version from the W3C Music Notation Community Group.
  • The Include subfolders option has been added to the MusicXML Preferences dialog box. When selecting a single folder to translate to or from MusicXML, files that are located in the selected folder's subfolders are now included in the import and export process.
  • Measure number text is now exported when a file contains measure numbers that are repeated in multiple movements or sections.
  • Buzz rolls and unmeasured tremolos are now supported.
  • Line lengths are now supported for doit, falloff, scoop, and plop elements.
  • Finale expressions with a mix of text and musical symbols from any Finale built-in font are now supported.
  • Unexpected symbols in Finale articulations from any Finale built-in font can now be exported in a way that can be exchanged with other applications.
  • Unexpected symbols in MusicXML files can now be imported into Finale articulations if the symbol is present in any Finale built-in font.
  • Grace cue notes are now supported.
  • Image height and width attributes are now supported.
  • Metric modulation arrows are now exported from metronome marks written in the MaestroTimes font.
  • The brass-bend, flip, golpe, half-muted, harmon-mute, haydn, inverted-vertical-turn, open, smear, soft-accent, and staff-divide elements are now supported.
  • Sostenuto and abbreviated pedal symbols are now supported.
  • The beater pictograms for drum stick, slide brush on gong, and superball are now supported.
  • The beater pictograms for glockenspiel, gum, hammer, superball, and wound stick types are now supported.
  • The effect pictograms for lotus flute and megaphone are now supported.
  • The glass pictograms for glass harmonica and glass harp are now supported.
  • The membrane pictograms for Chinese tomtom, cuica, Indo-American tomtom, and Japanese tomtom are now supported.
  • The metal pictograms for agogo, bell tree, cencerro, chain rattle, jaw harp, jingle bells, musical saw, shell bells, and tam tam with beater are now supported.
  • The pitched pictograms for celesta, lithophone, steel drums, and tubaphone are now supported.
  • The wood pictograms for bamboo scraper, castanets with handle, football rattle, quijada, rainstick, reco-reco, and whip are now supported.
  • The handbell belltree symbol is now supported.

• Round Corners. The Round Corners checkbox and Corner Radius field have been added to the Enclosure Designer dialog box and the Standard Frame dialog box. Use these options to round corners for enclosures that surround expressions, text repeats, text created with the Text tool, and measure numbers.
• Key Signature Cancellation. The When Switching Between Sharps and Flats checkbox has been added to the Document Options - Key Signatures dialog box. When unchecked, canceling naturals are not displayed when moving between sharp and flat keys such as Bb to G or F to D.
• Audio Unit Instrument Presets. When selecting an Audio Unit instrument from the Audio Units Banks & Effects dialog box, presets can now be selected by using the Preset popup menu in the Audio Unit Viewer dialog box.
• MusicXML 3.1. MusicXML 3.0 has been updated to MusicXML 3.1. When translating a folder of Finale files to uncompressed MusicXML 3.1 files, the .musicxml file extension is now used. In addition to the new file extension, the following has been improved between MusicXML 3.1 export and import:
  • Arrowhead symbols
  • Circled noteheads
  • Dynamics such as n, pf, and sfzp symbols
  • Hidden ledger lines
  • Enclosures with more than 4 sides
  • Expressions or text blocks that contain a mix of Maestro text and symbols
  • Parenthesized accidental marks
  • Unexpected Maestro symbols used for articulations
  • Distinction between Finale's two default percussion clefs (rectangle and vertical lines)
  • To see a full list of MusicXML features, refer to the Read Me.

• Crescendo and Decrescendo Openings. The opening width of short and long crescendo/decrescendo markings are now independent of each other and can be set in the Smart Shape Options dialog box.
• MusicXML Preferences. Restrict MusicXML formatting has been added to the MusicXML Preferences dialog box.
• Nonstandard Key Signatures. A Symbol button has been added to the Symbol List dialog box. This allows Unicode Musical Symbols to be used as accidentals in nonstandard key signature definitions by selecting them from the Symbol Selection dialog box.
• Finder and Spotlight. Metadata has been improved and updated to 64-bit. This allows users to search by Title, Composer, Copyright, Description, Time Signature, Key Signature, Lyricist, Pages, Page Width, Page Height, Content Creator, Duration, Fonts, Default Music Font, Arranger, Subtitle, Staves, Parts, Instruments, and Tempo. See Finale Spotlight Plug-in.
• Simple Entry Cursor. The Simple Entry Cursor now reflects the color selected in the Preferences - Display Colors dialog box for each layer. See Entering multiple voices with Layers or the QuickStart Videos to see this in action.
• SMuFL Symbols. If a SMuFL font is installed locally, SMuFL symbols are imported when a MusicXML import or export is performed.
• MusicXML Export. MusicXML export supports nonstandard key signatures created with Unicode symbols.
• Patterson Beams. Patterson Beams has been updated to respect Keep Octave Transposition in Concert Pitch. See Patterson Beams Plug-in and the Document menu.

• Keep Octave Transposition in Concert Pitch. This option has been added to the Document menu for C instruments that transpose the octave. See the Document menu.
• MusicXML Preferences. Use current document if empty has been added to the MusicXML Preferences dialog box.
• Templates. New Marching Band Tabloid and Studio Orchestra templates have been added. The Drum Corps and Marching Band Letter templates have been updated.
• Measure Number Bar. A Measure Number Bar now appears along to the top of the screen in Scroll and Studio View. See Preferences - New dialog box.

• Hyphens. Users can now choose the hyphen character for their lyrics under Document > Document Options > Lyrics.
• Mute All and Solo All. Individual and universal Mute and Solo settings can easily be toggled using M and S in the ScoreManager.
• Backward Repeat Bracket Position. Find options to determine the position of your repeat ending brackets by using the Repeat Endings dialog box in the Document Options.
• Graphics. A transparent background can now be selected in the Graphic tool's Export dialog box and when this option is selected, Finale's output is true black.
• Document Windows. Finale includes Automatic Tabbed Windows and Automatic Snapping Windows in macOS Sierra.
• ReWire. Finale's Playback Controls can now be used while in ReWire mode. The Device to ReWire Master Tempo check box has been added to the Playback Controls to allow the user to either use Finale's tempo map or their DAW's tempo. A Sync button has been added to the Playback Controls to update score data when using a DAW to playback. See ReWire and ReWire Playback Controls.

• 64-bit. Finale and plug-ins updated to 64-bit. This means increased Finale performance and you can use Finale with a larger variety of sound libraries.
• CoreGraphics. Color and image handling updated to CoreGraphics.
• Partial measure selection. Utilities > Change > Chords now works on partial measure selections.
• Increased Human Playback processing speed. Instrument sounds load and playback faster.
• ReWire. Finale can now be used with 3rd party digital audio workstations via ReWire. See ReWire.
• Garritan Instruments for Finale. New additions include the Concert D Grand Piano from Garritan Personal Orchestra 5, recorders, dulcimer, didgeridoo, full choir, and many other sounds from the Garritan World Instruments and Instant Orchestra libraries. See Garritan Instruments for Finale instrument details.
• Percussion Note Types. Mark tree and snares off options available as percussion note types.
• Large Time Signatures. Large time signatures can be created easily with the new Time Signatures in Score and Time Signatures in Parts options in the Staff Attributes, Global Staff Attributes, and Staff Styles dialog boxes. See Time signatures.
• Transposed Instrument Note Entry. Transpose Audio On Input option added under MIDI/Audio > Device Setup to help aid QWERTY and mouse entry for transposed instruments. See Device Setup submenu.
• Contoured Dashed Slurs. Contoured dashed slurs are now available in the Smart Shape Palette and under Tools > Smart Shape > Dashed Slur. The previous Dashed Slur Smart Shape has been renamed to Dashed Curve and is still available in the Smart Shape Palette and under Tools > Smart Shape > Dashed Curve. See Slurs.
• Reset All Preferences. Reset All Preferences button added to the Preferences dialog box. See Preferences dialog box.
• MusicXML. In addition to the new MusicXML Preferences dialog box, exported inserts from the text and expression tools, imported articulation position accuracy, and Smart Shape export quality have been improved. To see a full list of MusicXML features, refer to the Read Me.

• New file format. Designed to improve compatibility, the new MUSXMUSX or .musx. A Finale Notation File is the standard MakeMusic notation or music file, introduced in Finale 2014. It can be read by either the Mac or Windows version of Finale. format for documents created in Finale helps you share your music more easily. Older Finale documents are automatically converted when you open them, and you will be prompted to save the file in the new format. You can also export your document to the older format for use in Finale 2012 (use MusicXML for earlier versions of Finale). See Finale File Extensions and File/Export/Finale 2012.
• Keyless scores. Create scores or sections with no key signature. You can also easily hide key signatures and continue to automatically display accidentals using the Hide key signature/Show accidentals option. See Keyless scores.
• Beat-attached Smart Shapes. Smart Shapes that previously attached to measures now attach to beats (in the same manner as expressions) with lines showing the attachment point. Beat attachment allows a Smart Shape start or end point to attach to a particular note, beat, or right barline. Affected Smart Shapes include hairpins, trills and trill extensions, 8va/8vb (ottava/ottava bassa), horizontal brackets, and lines. These Smart Shapes in older documents converted to the 2014 format retain their original locations and are automatically attached to the nearest beat. See Smart Shape tool.
• Smart multi-layer accidental and rest handling. Rests of the same duration and accidentals on unison notes in multiple layers now are displayed only once. Accidentals in one layer are also carried through the measure for all other layers (these can optionally be displayed in Staff Attributes or Staff Styles). See Staff Attributes dialog box/Documents Options - Layers dialog box and Entering multiple voices using layers.
• Improved percussion functionality. There is now greater interaction between the Percussion Layout Designer and Percussion MIDI Maps, and Percussion MIDI Maps can now be removed. See Percussion and Finale 2014 Interface Changes.
• Unlinkable Special Tools. Many of the Special Tools are now unlinkable items between a score and its parts. Additionally, the Patterson Beams plug-in can be applied to a part without affecting the score. See Linking Details for Linked Parts.
• MP4 support. Finale now supports loading MP4 videos.
• Improved Scanning/SmartScore Lite Enhancements. Finale now includes SmartScore Lite version X2, offering improved notation recognition.
• New ARIA Player. Finale includes the latest ARIA Player from Garritan, with more than 400 instruments including the additions of alto flute, bass flute, oboe d'amore, Eb clarinet, contrabass clarinet, piccolo trumpet, tubular bells, percussion "toys", flugelhorn, basic African percussion, steel drums, banjo, fife, tablas, Celtic harp, and nine mixtures and string techniques from Garritan Instant Orchestra. • Improvements to opening files. Finale displays all readable file types in the Open dialog box. Additionally, MusicXML files can now be dragged-and-dropped onto the Finale application.
• New method for Finale updates. At launch, Finale automatically checks for updates. Instead of requiring you to download and install the updates manually from the Finale website, Finale now downloads and installs the updates automatically.

What's New in Finale 2014d

• Help Improve Finale. After you install the Finale 2014d maintenance update, a new dialog box appears on the first launch asking whether or not you want to submit anonymous usage data to MakeMusic. MakeMusic uses this data to inform the design of new versions of Finale; no personally-identifiable or document information is ever collected, and you can change your mind at any time in the Help menu.

• SmartMusic Accompaniments with high-quality audio playback. When you export an assessable solo SmartMusic Accompaniment from Finale, you can now include Finale's audio playback rather than the default MIDI sounds. This includes both playback through the Garritan Instruments for Finale sounds or other Audio Units plug-ins and any loaded audio track in a document. See Configuring audio playback for SmartMusic Accompaniments.
• Improved audio output support. Finale is no longer restricted to playback at 44.1 kHz and can play at any sample rate supported by the selected audio output device. Additionally, Finale automatically selects another output device rather than crashing when audio devices are removed. See Audio Setup dialog box.
• Reorder staves. The Reorder Staves dialog box has been restored, allowing you to change the vertical order of multiple staves and groups at the same time. See Reorder Staves dialog box.
• Automatic double barlines before key changes. This option in the Document Options - Barlines dialog box automatically places a double barline before all key changes in a document. Replacing the functionality of the removed Automatic Barlines plug-in, this feature can be overridden in individual measures. See Document Options - Barlines dialog box.
• Beaming over page breaks. The Beam Over Barlines plug-in, part of the Patterson Beams plug-ins, now beams correctly over page breaks. See Beam Over Barlines Plug-in.
• SmartMusic file compatibility interface improvements. When creating a SmartMusic Accompaniment in Finale, the SmartMusic File Compatibility dialog box now provides additional options for both automatically and manually correcting possible issues. See SmartMusic Accompaniment File Compatibility dialog box.
• Updated MusicXML and EPUB export. Among other changes, exported MusicXML files now support the automatic double barlines preceding key changes option. EPUB export has been updated to the latest EPUB 3 standard. See Export submenu and EPUB files.
• Updated SmartScore X2 Lite. The scanning software included with Finale has been updated to version 10.5.8, offering improvements in recognition of beams, augmentation dots, tuplets, and other musical elements.
• Modified Stave Notation. Finale now includes a template and a FinaleScript script to create large print music according to the Modified Stave Notation (MSN) standard. Also included is a list of guidelines; see Large print music.
• Improved User Manual. The Finale User Manual is now viewable on mobile devices, uses a completely-redesigned navigational structure, includes updated and accurate content, and features substantially improved search.

• Improved Instrument Handling. Finale now integrates staff attributes and playback sounds into its new Instrument paradigm, which allows for easier score management and automatic assignment of playback sounds. See Instruments.
• ScoreManager™. Administer complete control over score instruments in one convenient, modeless window. The ScoreManager allows you to add, delete, and reorder score instruments, change instrument sounds, and even apply mixer settings like panning and volume. See ScoreManager.
• Easy Instrument Doubling. Introduce instrument changes at any point in the score with a new option under the Utilities menu. Transposition, clef, and other staff settings, as well as playback sound, are configured automatically. See To add a mid-score instrument change.
• New Garritan Sounds, including soprano sax, celeste, accordion, recorder, mandolin, euphonium solo, baroque pipe organ with plenum reed stop, and pipe organ pedal stop. See Garritan Instruments for Finale.
• Improved File Sharing. Maintain high-quality Audio Units playback when exchanging Finale files with colleagues. See Sound Maps.
• Auto-detect MIDI Devices. Finale now identifies external MIDI devices as soon as you plug them in. No setup required! See MIDI Setup dialog box.

• Speedier Playback Processing. Without the need to prescan your music, a click on the Play button initiates playback with almost no hesitation. Only Human Playback processing is necessary (if HP is enabled).
