Staff names

1. In the Score Manager, select the instrument you want to change.
2. Click Full Name or Abbr. Name to edit the respective staff name. The Edit Text dialog box appears.
3. Type a new staff name in the window, or make changes to the existing staff name. Change fonts and styles using the commands in the Text menu.
4. Click OK to confirm the name.

These instructions show you how to set the default position for all full and abbreviated staff names, except for those names that have been positioned individually. You can also override the default positions on a staff-by-staff basis: see To reposition staff names individually.

1. Choose the Staff tool . The Staff menu appears.
2. Choose Staff > Set Default Name Positions > Full Staff Names or Abbreviated Staff Names. The Position dialog box appears.
3. Specify the alignment of the staff name by choosing Left, Right, or Center from the Alignment drop-down menu. Finale automatically selects the matching setting (Left, Right or Center) for the Justification drop-down menu.
4. Optional: Specify the justification for multi-line names by choosing Left, Right, Center, or Forced Full from the Justification drop-down menu.

   Choosing Full justification has the same effect as choosing Left justification, because each line is treated as the end of a paragraph.

5. Drag the name in the display area to adjust its position, or enter new positioning numbers into the H and V text boxes.

   The H value determines the horizontal distance between the beginning of the staff name and the left edge of the staff. The V value determines the vertical distance between the top of the staff name and the top line of the staff. The units are whatever you've selected under Edit > Measurement Units.

6. Click OK. All staff names in your document that have not been positioned individually move to the positioning settings you've specified.

Noteman says: If you want to position a name for an instrument that uses two or more staves, see To group staves.

7. Click OK. The selected staff name moves to the positioning settings you've specified.

1. Choose Document > Document Options and select Fonts. The Document Options - Fonts dialog box appears.
2. From the Text drop-down menu, choose Staff Names (Full) and click Set Font. The Font dialog box appears.
3. Set the initial font, size, and style to use when creating full staff names. Click OK to confirm the changes.
4. Repeat this process for abbreviated staff names (Text > Staff Names (Abbreviated)).
5. Click OK to confirm your changes and return to the document. When you add a new staff to your score, its staff name will use the font settings you've chosen.

1. Choose the Staff tool . The Staff menu appears.
2. Select a staff and choose Staff > Edit Staff Attributes. (Or, double-click a staff, a staff handle, or a staff name.) The Staff Attributes dialog box appears.
3. Under Items to Display, deselect Staff Name in Score.

   This setting controls whether the staff names you enter in the Score Manager will appear on your printed score. Default names enclosed in square brackets only display on-screen; they never appear on your printed score.

4. Click OK to confirm your changes and return to the document. Finale remembers the staff name, but hides it for printing.
