Certain types of music include a measure at the beginning of a score that is not necessarily considered part of the score itself. These introductory measures are used for a variety of purposes: incipits in vocal music, initial pitches in chant or Renaissance music, ranges for a particular voice, and so on. There are several methods to create these types of measures.
