Adding articulations

Using the Articulation tool to add staccatos, accents, tenutos, and other note-attached markings.

Articulations tell the performer how to perform individual notes, and usually appear as small shape figures directly above or below the note entry. In Finale, these figures are attached to note and added with the Articulation tool.

In this lesson, you will learn how to:

  1. Add articulations individually
  2. Apply articulations to several notes at once

Adding articulations individually

The positioning of Articulations is fixed to its notehead or stem whenever the music moves horizontally, and may flip above/below the staff accordingly as the pitch is changed. Let's add a tenuto articulation to the first dotted quarter note in the vocal part.

To add an articulation

  1. Choose the Articulation tool .
  2. Click on the G in measure 1, top staff. The Articulation Selection dialog box appears.
  3. Double-click the tenuto marking (slot 7).

Applying articulations to multiple notes

Like the Expression tool, the Articulation tool allows you to drag-select several notes or measures and apply the same articulation at once.

To apply articulations to several notes at once

  1. Drag-select beats 3 and 4 in measure 3, top staff.
  2. Click Select.
  3. Double-click the tenuto marking (slot 7).
  4. Click OK.
