Harp pedal diagrams and settings

Harp pedal diagrams can be created using a series of manually adjusted expressions from the Harp Pedal library included with Finale or by using characters from the Engraver Font T/H/NCS Character Set to create a single expression. Pedal settings can be created and displayed by using either the Expression tool icon or the Text tool icon.

To load the Harp Pedal library into your score

  1. Choose File > Load Library. The Load Library dialog box appears.
  2. Navigate to the Miscellaneous folder and double-click the Harp Diagram library. This library contains two shapes: the empty cross-shaped “skeleton;” and a single, vertical, pedal line.
  3. Select the Expression tool icon and double-click anywhere on the score. The Expression Selection dialog box appears.
  4. Choose the Miscellaneous category. Notice the two new shapes harp pedal diagrams.
  5. Harp pedal diagram and separator options
  6. Click Cancel to return to the document. It’s important to place each harp-pedal shape into the score using Metatools. See To create Expression Metatools. Otherwise, you won’t be able to adjust the pedals independently on each diagram.

Finally, you place the diagram into the score in two steps. First, use the Expression tool to place the Metatool empty cross-shaped “skeleton” into the score. Now add the other Expression—the one that represents the pedal. Once these pedal shapes are placed into the score, again using Metatools, you can drag their handles up or down to adjust the positions of the various pedals.

To use the Engraver Text Character Set to add pedal diagrams to your score

Harp pedaling diagrams can be created by using a combination of characters from the Engraver Text Character Set.

  1. Choose the Expression tool icon. Double-click on, above, or below the note to which you want to attach the marking. The Expression Selection dialog box appears.
  2. Choose the Miscellaneous category from the list on the left. Finale automatically applies the category's font, style, and size to the new expression. If you would like to change the font, size, or style, you can do so in the Category Designer dialog box.
  3. Click the Create Misc. Expression button. The Expression Designer dialog box appears.
  4. Enter a Description of the harp diagram.
  5. Use the Font dropdown menu to select from EngraverTextH, EngraverTextNCS, or EngraverTextT.

The Engraver Text fonts correspond to the standard fonts used for the text portions of the font: T for Times, H for Helvetica and NCS for New Century Schoolbook.

  6. Use the table below to enter diagram characters. For this example, the corresponding characters are OpOPoppo.
  7. Keystroke Character Description
    o Harp pedal raised
    SHIFT+o Harp pedal centered
    p Harp pedal lowered
    SHIFT+p Harp pedal divider

To use the Engraver Text Character Set to add pedal harp settings to your score

Pedal settings can be created by using the Expression tool icon or by using the Text tool icon to enter a setting directly into the score.

  1. To create an expression, use Steps 1-5 from the To use the Engraver Text Character Set to add harp pedal diagrams to your score section above. To add pedal settings directly to your score, select the Text tool icon.
  2. Double-click within the score. A text box appears with a blinking cursor.
  3. Choose Text > Font and select from EngraverTextH, EngraverTextNCS, or EngraverTextT.

The Engraver Text fonts correspond to the standard fonts used for the text portions of the font: T for Times, H for Helvetica and NCS for New Century Schoolbook.

  4. Pedal settings can be displayed in either one line or two lines. When arranged on two lines, characters need to be entered inline vertically, rather than horizontally. For this example, the first character entered is a bracket (k). It is followed by SHIFT+e to enter E and then Text > Inserts > Symbol > 182 to enter the D directly below E. Follow the same stacking method and use the table below to enter the pedal setting characters.
