Hiding staves
PrintMusic allows you to both hide empty staves and staves containing music. You can also choose particular staves for playback - see Playback-To play back selected staves.

- Click the Staff tool
. The Staff menu appears.
- In Page View, select the empty staves you want to hide. You can either highlight the staff handle(s), or select at least one measure of the staff in systems you want to affect. See Selecting Music. Press CTRL+A to Select All.
- Choose Staff > Hide Empty Staves. The staves disappear from the score, and are replaced with dashed lines indicating the existence of one or more hidden staves.
Use this method to hide staves that you don’t want printed; for example, staves containing notes for playback only, such as written-out trills, turns, or doubled parts.
- Choose the Staff tool . The Staff menu appears.
- Select a staff, then choose Staff > Edit Staff Attributes. Or, double-click a staff, a staff handle, or a staff name. Or, choose Staff > Edit Staff Attributes without selecting a staff. The Staff Attributes dialog box appears. To display the attributes of another staff, choose a staff from the Staff Attributes for drop-down menu.
- Select Hide Staff and click OK. Any staff that you hide using this method will still appear in any Staff Lists, but “(hidden)” will appear after the staff’s name in the list. Staves below the hidden stave move up to fill the gap left by the hidden staff.
- Click the Staff tool . The Staff menu appears. A dashed line appears wherever hidden empty staves exist in your score. (Be sure you are viewing the score in Page View).
- Select the handle on the left edge of the dashed blue line.
- Choose Staff > Show Empty Staves. Or, right-click the handle and choose which staves you would like to show from the context menu.
If you’ve hidden a staff using the Hide Staff option in the Staff Attributes dialog box, PrintMusic displays “(hidden)” after the name of the staff in the Staff Attributes for drop-down menu in the Staff Attributes dialog box.
- Choose the Staff tool . The Staff menu appears.
- Click the handle on a hidden staff, then choose Staff > Edit Staff Attributes. If you can’t find staff handles in your score, or if you’re not sure which staves are hidden, choose Staff > Edit Staff Attributes without selecting a staff. The Staff Attributes dialog box appears. Choose the hidden staff from the Staff Attributes for drop-down menu, which provides a complete list of all staves in the score.
- Deselect Hide Staff. The staff will reappear when you return to the score.
- Click OK.
