Stem Direction submenu

Finale decides whether a note’s stem should go up or down depending on its vertical position in the staff. If you’ve specified a multiple-voice arrangement—for example, upper voice = stems up, lower voice = stems down—using the Document Options - Layers dialog box, Finale chooses the stem directions automatically. Use this submenu to define the stem direction for a measure manually.

  • Up • Down. Choose these commands to flip a region of stems up or down manually.
  • Use Default Direction. Choose this command to restore stems that have been "frozen" (using the Up or Down commands in this submenu) to stems that can flip depending on pitch. This command also removes any Reverse, Double, or Split Stem editing you've done with Special Tools.
