Use this menu to make various changes to selected note(s). For a full list of keyboard shortcuts, see Keyboard shortcuts and special mouse clicks.
- Delete. Choose this command to remove the selected note(s).
- Show/Hide. Choose this command to either show or hide the entire selected chord, note, or rest.
- Flip Stem. Choose this command to reverse the current stem direction of the selected note. Select the first note of a beamed group to change the direction of all stems in the beam group.
- Default Stem. Choose this command to allow stems to flip up or down, depending on the placement of the note.
- Break/Join Beam. Choose this command to either force the selected note to beam to the previous note or to break the beam between the two notes.
- Default Beam. Choose this command to allow beams to break or join according to your beam settings in the Document Options - Beams dialog box.
- Flat Beam. Choose this command to force the selected beam to appear horizontally flat. Note that the first note of the beam group must be selected to flatten the beam.
- Tie
- Flip Tie. Select the first note of a tie and choose this command to reverse the current tie direction.
- Auto Tie. Choose this command to allow Finale to decide what direction to set the curve of the tie according to the settings in the Document Options - Ties dialog box.
- Toggle Note/Rest. Choose this command to change the selected note into a rest.
- Combine/Split Rests. Choose this command to combine or split the selected rest with rests on the same beat in other
layersAn independent overlay of music in the same measure. Each Finale document consists of four transparent layers, each of which can contain its own rhythmically independent inner voice. Only one layer can be active (frontmost) at a time, however; the layer selection pop-up menu appears in the lower left corner of your Finale window, indicating which layer is active. Note that each layer may also contain 2 independent voices.- Combining rests: Finale only combines rests of equal duration occurring on the same beat. Rests are combined in this manner only if there are no sounding notes in any layer on that beat. When combined, the rest is displayed as the currently selected layer.
- Splitting rests: Finale creates individual rests in all layers that are being used in that measure. They are vertically positioned according to their default position.
- Rest positioning: If an individual rest has been repositioned, it cannot be combined with rests in other layers. Combined rests are centered vertically on the staff, but can be manually repositioned like any other rest; any repositioning affects all layers. In these contexts, positioning includes dragging horizontally and vertically in Speedy Entry, moving up and down with the arrow keys in Simple Entry, using the Note Position tool, and editing the Position field in the Edit Frame dialog box.
- Rest size: If an individual rest has been resized with the Resize tool
, it cannot be combined with rests in other layers. Resizing combined rests with the Resize tool affects all layers. - Hiding rests: If any rests on a particular beat have been hidden, the rests on that beat cannot be combined. If a combined rest is hidden, the rest is hidden in all layers.
- Changing a rest to a note: If a combined rest is changed to a note (for example, with the Toggle Note/Rest command), the note appears only in the active layer. Rests in other layers that were part of the combined rest appear in those layers as normal (not combined) rests.
- Grace Note. Choose this command to change the selected note to a grace note. See Grace notes.
- Enharmonic. Choose this menu item to change a selected note to its enharmonic equivalent. See Enharmonics.
