How to get there

1. Choose the Simple Entry tool to activate the Simple Entry caret.
2. Press a triggerIn Finale, the term "trigger" describes a keyboard shortcut that is used to display the Waiting for Input dialog box while entering music with the Simple Entry caret. Once displayed, a Metatool key can be used to enter certain markings, or the marking can be chosen from a selection dialog box. key:
   • articulations: * (asterisk on numeric keypad) [a note or rest must be selected]
   • expressions: x [a note or rest must be selected]
   • clef: OPTION+C
   • time signature: OPTION+T
   • key signature: OPTION+K

What it does

Finale offers this quick method of inserting markings without exiting the Simple Entry tool. When you press one of the trigger keys listed above, this alert box is displayed. It disappears either when you select a marking, when you press a Metatool key, or when you click Cancel.

• Select. Click this button (or press RETURN) to choose a marking to insert from the corresponding dialog box (Articulation Selection, Expression Selection, Change Clef, Time Signature, or Key Signature). Alternatively, if you know the MetatoolA Finale keyboard shortcut that lets you enter markings very quickly. Up to 36 Metatools can be programmed for the following items: Articulations, Chord Symbols, Expressions, Key Signatures, Time Signatures, Selection, Repeats, and Tuplets. The name for these shortcuts gave rise to the old chestnut, "I never metatool I didn't like." assigned to the marking that you want to insert, press that key instead of clicking Select.
• Cancel. Click this button to return to the score without making any changes.
