You can create notes without heads on either a note-by-note or global basis (for notes of indeterminate pitch or "stick notation", for example).
To remove the notehead of a single note
- Choose the Special Tools tool
and click the measure in question. - Choose the Note Shape Tool
. A handle appears on each notehead. - Double-click the handle of the desired notehead. The Symbol Selection dialog box appears, displaying every character in the music font. (Some of the squares in the palette are blank.)
- Double-click any blank square.
To restore the notehead, click its handle to select it and press DELETE.
To remove all noteheads
- Choose Document > Document Options > Notes and Rests. The Notes and Rests Options dialog box appears.
- Choose Notehead Characters > Quarter/Eighth, and then click Select. The Symbol Selection dialog box appears, displaying every character in the music font.
- Double-click any blank square. Repeat with the Half, Whole, and Double Whole notehead types, if they appear in your piece.
- Click OK.
To restore the noteheads, repeat the process. Instead of double-clicking a blank square, however, double-click the appropriate notehead shape in the palette.
To remove all noteheads in a region
- Choose the Selection tool
, and select a region. See Selecting music for some region-selecting shortcuts. - Choose Utilities > Change > Noteheads. The Change Noteheads dialog box appears.
- Under Find, select All Noteheads.
- Under Change to, select Selected Notehead.
- Next to Selected Notehead, click Select. The Symbol Selection dialog box appears.
- In the Search field enter "Notehead." Double-click on Slot U+E0A5. If you are using a legacy non-SmuFL font, like Maestro, select slot 32. See Fonts fro more information.
- Click OK. The noteheads are replaced with blank characters.
To restore the noteheads, repeat the process. Instead of selecting Selected Notehead, select Regular Noteheads and click OK.
