JW Space Empty Rests

How to get there

Choose Plug-Ins > JW Tools > JW Space Empty Rests.

What it does

This plug-in spaces multimeasure rests and/or single measure rests relative to their duration, making parts with many rests much more professional and easier to read. Multimeasure rests can be either spaced according to the number of measures or to their durations (in beats). The existing music scaling factor for the document is used. Note that this plug-in will not work correctly when the option at Document Options > Multimeasure Rests > Update Automatically is on. If this is on, you will be warned and given the option for the plug-in to turn this off for you.

  • Spacing Mode. This menu has three different spacing modes to choose from that control the way your music will be spaced by the plug-in. Depending on which option is selected, there will be different menus and fields in the plug-in available.
    • Redistribute Existing Rest Space. This is the default mode for spacing rests and will not affect the width of measures with music in them. It is recommended to use this option after all measures have been assigned to their correct systems.
    • Respace Using New Values. This mode will adjust the widths of the measures based off of numerical values. Use this mode if you want to respace the measures before they are arranged into the correct systems. When this mode is selected, custom settings under Single Rests and Multimeasure Rests sections will become available. These values, along with the settings for Minimum Measure Width and Maximum Measure Width at Document Options > Music Spacing, are used to calculate the spacing width applied to these measures.
    • Redistribute Non-Rest Measures. This option will redistribute measures containing notation based of off the currently selected measures' relative spacing and the default note spacing method.
  • Scope. This menu provides three different options for area of the document that will processed; Region in Current Score/Part, Full Score and All Parts, All Parts Only. Note that options that affect multiple parts will always process the full part, so selecting a region is not necessary for these options.
  • Single Rests. This area provides controls to adjust the spacing for single measure rests. This option can be turned off with either of the Spacing Modes that affect rest measures by deselecting Space Empty Simple Rests. When using the Respace Using New Values mode, the Default Width and the Reference Measure are used to calculate the respacing reference width.
  • Multimeasure Rests. This area provides controls to adjust the spacing for multimeasure rests. This option can be turned off with either of the Spacing Modes that affects rest measures by deselecting Space Multimeasure Rests. The Measure Width option at Document Options > Multimeasure Rests is used as the reference value when using the Respace Using New Values Spacing Mode. This means that this amount will be applied to the option selected in the Reference Rest dropdown menu and respace the multimeasure rests accordingly.
  • Close • Apply. Click Close to dismiss the dialog box without making any changes or when you have completed your desired changes. Click Apply to process the document with the settings currently set in the plug-in.
